Bowie State University NMMHP Male Health Conference:
On April 24-25, 2010 NMMHP will co-sponsor a conference on the campus of Bowie State University in the Center for Learning and Technology with the Student Adlerian Society, and the Graduate Student Association. This year’s conference theme will focus on Holistic Health issues, suggested theme for this year’s conference:
“Holistic Health: Man-up for Your Health! Healthy Men Move Our Communities Forward”.
Barbershop Training Program:
The New Minority Male Health Project (NMMHP) at Bowie State University (BSU) is dedicated to improving the health of minority males in the communities of Prince George’s County and its environment. As NMMHP at BSU continue to fulfill project goals and objectives, it is imperative that we continue to promote a strategy that provides education and intervention activities to the male population at BSU and the community surrounding the University. In line with this commitment and for the benefit of our community partners, the NMMHP at Bowie State University plans to initiate a blood pressure training program that will encompass training barbers from several barbershops within the Prince George’s County community. This training will be conducted by certified personnel. Upon completion of class, participants will receive a certificate of training to offer blood pressures checks in their barbershops.
NMMHP Televised Health Journals:
The NMMHP team successfully completed the design and production of a state-of-the-art TV Set to be used for the express purpose of broadcasting 30-minute Health Journals throughout Prince Georges County, especially on the BSU campus. The set provides a backdrop for critical discussion of the top health disparities facing minority males by highly trained medical professionals. To date, taping is complete on three health journals - with more on the horizon.
Dr. Otis Thomas, former TV Anchor and professor for Bowie State University's department of Communications, is the host for the health journals. Each of the journals will run at a minimum of 30 days per cycle and show each day for three segments in the morning, at midday, and in the evening. We are excited about the impact into the community this venue will provide for educating our community about these important issues.
